For education sites

Planning EV charging at a school or college?

A school charging project needs to work around the site, not just the equipment. Think about staff parking, visitor access, available electricity supply and how the premises may need to charge more vehicles in future. UK EV Charging can help start the conversation and check whether an appropriate independent partner is available.

Current government funding for state-funded education

From 1 April 2026, eligible state-funded schools and other state-funded education institutions can apply for a grant covering up to 75% of purchase and installation costs, capped at £2,000 per socket, for up to 40 sockets across sites under the scheme rules. Older vouchers arising from applications before April 2026 may retain a different value.

Independent schools are not covered by that separate education rate but may qualify under the standard Workplace Charging Scheme. Always check the official government education grant guidance and confirm application and installer requirements before work starts.

Survey the site before choosing equipment

An appropriately authorised installer should review the available power, cable routes, parking layout and likely number of users. They can advise whether load management or an electrical supply upgrade is needed. School access, safety procedures, vehicle movements and who may use the chargers should be considered at the outset.

Plan for maintenance and future bays

Ask how equipment will be maintained, who responds if a charger stops working, whether charging can be monitored or billed and whether additional parking bays could be prepared for later use. Civil works, ground conditions and reinstatement can affect the overall budget even when the charger hardware itself is straightforward.

Discuss the project without committing

Tell us the institution's postcode, whether charging is intended for staff, visitors or other users and roughly what you have in mind. We can explore the next step; if a suitable partner is not yet available, we will say so. Any formal survey, quote or installation contract remains directly with the independent installer.
